Goodbye 2011, a quick year in review…

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

2011 was the biggest year ever for MaXXX Black and we couldn’t have done it without you – all of you!

So as we look ahead to 2012 we can’t help be proud of our biggest achievements this year:

MaXXX Brings Latex Fashion to Sydney

Throughout 2011 MaXXX has been building and filling The Rubber Room – our latex department – and it is now the largest latex fashion collection in Sydney. We love latex and it is a thrill to be able to bring Honour UK, SkinTwo, Matt Bylett and Rubber55 to Australia.

Look out in early 2012 for even bigger news – a brilliant latex label will be with us soon (and there’s even more to come!).

MaXXX Black WINS at the Eros Shine Awards

Thanks to the hundreds of votes from our friends, fans and supporters plus the discernment of the panel, MAXXX Black was the proud nominee for Best Independant Adult Store AND Best Australian Retail Website at the very first Eros Shine Awards.

But best of all we took out the award for Best Australian Adult Store Management! Our beautiful crystal statuette is proudly on display in-store.

MaXXX Black Opens Vintage Vibrator Exhibition

In January 2011 we put the final couple of items into our Vintage Vibrator Exhibition. Our collection of vintage pleasure devices goes all the way back to 1895 and covers over 110 years of erotic toy history.

The collection is on permanent display in the entrance of MaXXX Black Sydney.

Our Therapist & Community Network Expands

Once upon a time we worked with just a couple of sex therapists and counsellors. Throughout 2011 we’ve continued to seek out (and be found by) some the city’s best relationship and sex experts.  We’ve become even more dedicated to spreading the word on sex positivity, safety, and fun by building better relationships with health agencies, providers and community services so we can be the most informed, and helpful, adult store in Australia.

If you’d like a referral to a sex therapist or relationship counsellor, just ask. We have all the contact information, cards etc for all of our community partners right here in store.

Lelo Sussura Launches Exculsively At MaXXX Black

Up until November 2011, the Lelo Sussura line of exquisite silk loungewear and lingerie had only been available in a number of selected stores worldwide including the Galleries Lafayette Berlin.  This premier collection makes use of silk stripe chiffon, silk satin and silk habutai in the most desirable pieces we’ve ever stocked for women and men.

But now the collection is housed in our Sydney store and can be purchased online as well!

MaXXX Black Brings RodeoH to Australia

We love finding new and delicious products to bring to Aussies, and even more we love something that is simple, sexy and fun to use. That’s why when we first spotted RodeoH we just HAD to have them. Since launching in late 2011 RodeoH has become one of our most popular harness / strap on products, and is a must-have for dildo fans!

We even hooked them up with MOIST Sydney so look out at the Imperial Hotel Erskineville for the hot RodeoH dancers and special offers.

The MB Velvet Lounge Opens

Toy party plan has been around for ages, so when we decided to offer a shopping party experience, we thought we’d do it with a twist. After much hard work, and some stunning upholstery later, The Velvet Lounge opened in our Newtown store in October 2011. Lined in chic velvet and away from the main store area, this private, glamorous and comfortable room is now where MaXXX Black Parties are hosted. It fits up to 25 guests seated, and has already seen some very naughty shopping parties, as well as the odd workshop.

2012 will see all-new workshops, education events and special gigs all take place in our favourite new space!

But most of all, we love being here and doing what we do – and we love that you keep telling us what you want, and how you want it. The next year ahead is set to be our biggest ever, and we very much hope you’ll be along for the ride!

Well, that’s quite enough back-patting. Onward to 2012.

Sex Toy Review: Lelo Ina, A Different Kind Of Rabbit Vibrator

Sunday, April 3rd, 2011

Despite the Ina’s deceptively understated design, its function and shape have everything to do with maximum sensual satisfaction. Lelo is a company whose design aesthetic is consistently the perfect marriage of beauty, quality and functionality; with the Ina they have developed a luxurious dual action vibrator with a discreet, sophisticated look and the most intricately choreographed stimulation modes on the market.

Description and Materials

A newer member to Lelo’s Femme line of adult pleasure objects, the Ina is a multi-talented dual action vibrator with a shape that’s reminiscent of the traditional ‘rabbit’ vibrator. The Ina is made of a combination of materials: a velvety, phthalates-free high grade silicone that’s draped over a rigid body, and a shiny ABS plastic for the handle. The massager is a mid-sized vibrator that stands at 7.8 inches long with an insertable length of 3.5 inches. The available colors to choose from are a vibrant red, purple, or lime green.

The Ina’s S-shaped dimensions are practically identical to the Mona with the exception that it has a clitoral stimulator attached to its tapered middle. With such a lightweight (4.6 ounces to be exact), ergonomic design, it fits perfectly in the palm of your hand and is extremely easy to maneuver. It’s powered by a rechargeable built-in lithium ion battery, which affords up to 4 hours of play time from a mere 2 hours worth of charging; it also has a 90 day long stand-by period. There’s also a very useful self-locking feature that’s designed to prevent accidental activation.

How it Works

The massager contains two individually operated motors, one at the clitoris and one located near the g-spot, controlled with an intuitively designed, built-in interface. The 4 button control pad easily regulates speed and stimulation modes, giving the user precise control over sensations. The eight pre-programmed pleasure modes are the crowning glory, ranging from continuous, soft flutter … to intense pulsation. A few of them are so elaborately synchronized that the sensations oscillate, heighten and pulsate between the pleasure points like a finely tuned harmony.

Packaging & Storage

The packaging is nothing short of spectacular. The outer casing is a cardboard sleeve with an attractive, yet understated, design and sports a color scheme that complements the color of your Ina. Sliding it off reveals an elegant gift box, reminiscent of one that normally only encases precious jewelery. Also included is a luxurious satin pouch for safe-keeping, a multi language user manual, and a charger – as well as Lelo’s one year warranty agreement.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Lelo Ina

Proper care and maintenance will greatly increase the function and lifespan of this product. First, only use water based lubricants since silicone based varieties can potentially make the toy’s surface permanently tacky. Secondly, wash the toy before and after every use with hypoallergenic soap and warm water, making sure to rinse it off with hot water and patting it dry with a lint-free towel. However, take care to avoid submerging the toy into water; it is not waterproof and getting the inside of the DC socket wet may damage its operation.

Now we get to the good stuff. Thanks to Lelo’s ingenuity and excellent engineering, the Ina has eight of the most finely tuned stimulation

modes ever. Not only are these options impressive, they can also be turned up to high levels of intensity, answering the call of buzz-hungry users who need a tad more throttle than a run-of-the-mill vibrator can offer. However, sensitive users need not be intimidated as the Ina is still capable of offering the precise control and gentler speeds that Lelo is known for.

The shape of the body is absolutely ideal for tantalizing the g-spot and the shaft’s rigidity offers more control and adjustability. Another positive point is that the vibration is well distributed throughout the body of the toy, being most concentrated at both pleasure points – but without spilling over to the handle (that would inadvertently give one’s hand too much vibe).

One downside of the Ina is that it is not waterproof, and at the price it’d be nice to have the option of shower play. Another smaller drawback to consider is that the clitoral stimulator is a tad stiff and presses quite firmly against the erogenous zone; luckily, its hardness does relax a bit after repeated use.

Despite the fact that the Ina is quiet powerful, it is still among the quietest vibrators available on the adult toy market. When set to higher speeds, or the more complex program modes, the frequency is somewhat audible emitting a medium pitched frequency, but its sound is hardly enough to distract or irritate.

Lelo Ina

Long Term Appeal

Those who love the function and feel of a dual action vibrator will be nothing less than thrilled with its performance. Rest assured that the Ina, like most other Lelo pleasure products, will consistently keep you very satisfied.

The cost of the Ina is on the higher side. However, its dependability, performance and innovative construction make it well worth the investment in the end. And as a consolation, you never have to pay for batteries.

Final Thoughts

You’ll have no regrets saying, “The Ina is ‘a-mine-a’.” Its unparalleled pleasure modes, gratifyingly sensual ergonomic shape and superior construction make this adult plaything a top rated pick. We rate it at top-notch 10/10.

Vintage Norelco Vibrator On Display

Monday, March 14th, 2011

Since we launched the vintage vibrator exhibition here in our Newtown store we’ve had hundreds of people in to look at the amazing antique and vintage vibrators we have collected. Now we have another reason to see this interesting collection from our sexual past – the Norelco Home Beauty Salon, manufactured in 1971.

First developed in the late 1960s the Lady Norelco Home Beauty Salon was marketed to women as a total home beauty solution. It was manufactured by the Philips Corporation under the Lady Norelco Home Electrics brand.

The circular case included a single mains-powered electric unit that could be adapted to use one of the 13 attachments. The attachments include options for shaving, trimming, nail files & buffers, creme applicators and 5 different personal vibrating massager heads.

It now has pride of place in our display, next to machines that date back from as early as 1890!

If you haven’t already seen our collection pop into the store and take a look – it will open your eyes forever!

Product News: New We Vibe Colour!

Sunday, January 16th, 2011

We’ve been waiting for months but it’s finally here – the brand new colour from We-Vibe, the world’s first vibrator you wear while you make love.

A delicious splash of ruby red silicone, the new colour adds an all new dimension to what has been one of our most popular products.

Launched in early 2008, the We-Vibe is now distributed on every continent and in over 50 countries by thousands of retailers, including leading drug store chains, luxury boutiques, and adult stores like us.

A million people around the world already use the patented, C-shaped We-Vibe to inject more fun and intimacy into their loving relationships.  Supple and silky, the G-spot end of the We-Vibe glides inside easily while the other end nestles against her clitoris. In between, the ultra thin flex arm gently hugs her contours to hold the We-Vibe comfortably in place — while leaving plenty of room for him to slide inside and share the pleasure.

And now it comes in Ruby too.  Delicious.

Steam Baths for your Puss-wah!

Saturday, January 8th, 2011

Pungent steam rises from a boiling pot of a mugwort tea blended with wormwood and a variety of other herbs. Above it sits a nude woman on an open-seated stool, partaking in a centuries-old Korean remedy that is gaining a toehold in the West.

Vaginal steam baths, called chai-yok, are said to reduce stress, fight infections, clear hemorrhoids, regulate menstrual cycles and aid infertility, among many other health benefits. In Korea, many women steam regularly after their monthly periods.

There is folk wisdom — and even some logic — to support the idea that the carefully targeted steam may provide some physiological benefits for women. But there are no studies to document its effectiveness, and few American doctors have even heard of it.

“It sounds like voodoo medicine that sometimes works,” said Dr. Vicken Sahakian, medical director of Pacific Fertility Center in Los Angeles.

Niki Han Schwarz believes it worked for her. After five steams, she found she had fewer body aches and more energy. She also became pregnant eight months ago at the age of 45 after attempting to conceive for three years.

Han Schwarz and her husband, orthopedic surgeon Charles Schwarz, are determined to introduce vaginal steam baths to Southern California women. Their Santa Monica spa, Tikkun Holistic Spa, offers a 30-minute V-Steam treatment for $50. (The identical treatment is available for men, to steam the perineal area.)

At Daengki Spa in Koreatown, a 45-minute V-Herbal Therapy treatment can be had for $20 a squat. The steam includes a mixture of 14 herbs imported from Korea by spa manager Jin Young. The spa’s website claims the treatment will “rid the body of toxins” and help women with menstrual cramps, bladder infections, kidney problems and fertility issues. “It is a traditional Korean health remedy,” according to the website.

Across the country, chai-yok treatments are not easy to find. They are available in a scattering of alternative holistic health centers. The flashy Juvenex Spa in Manhattan offers its 30-minute Gyno Spa Cure for $75. A complete setup for a do-it-yourself steam — open-seated stool, boiler and herbs — can be purchased online for as little as $330.

Jacqueline Hellyer: 3 Kinds Of Sex Couples Need To Have

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

I like to divide sex in a long-term relationship into three types:

Cup Of Tea Sex – simple and comforting
Sensual Sex – luscious and bonding
Spicy Sex – exciting and adventurous

Cup of Tea Sex…

is that nice snuggle under the covers, nothing unexpected, nothing wild. You know each other, you know what works, you have a satisfying time. No great fireworks, but it’s good. Like a cup of tea: simple, warm and comforting.

But a sexual diet of just Cup of Tea sex is pretty dull. And if there’s not a good connection, it will feel empty.

Sensual Sex…

is when you take the time to create a gorgeous atmosphere and take the time to enjoys each others’ bodies in a sensual and loving manner. In this way the sex becomes very connecting, very bonding, very deep. This is the essence of Tantric sex, and with practice can lead to ecstatic states of being.

Which is wonderful and wholesome, but can do with some spicing up at times.

Spicy Sex…

is when you push your boundaries and do things that you find a real turn on (if a little intimidating!). What that is will depend on you and your own desires.

Spicy Sex could be as simple as introducing a sex toy to your sexual play, or starting with a slow striptease. It could be planning a weekend away and then visiting the vineyards knowing you or your partner has no knickers on. It could be visiting a sex store and bringing home something new and unusual (now how does this bondage tape work…) It could be visiting a swingers lounge. It could be having a nude dinner party, either the two of you alone or inviting friends… The possibilities are endless.  But keep in mind that Spicy Sex doesn’t just ‘happen’, it requires your creativity and your intention.

Now, given the reality of modern lives, it’s unlikely that every sexual encounter is going to be Spicy Sex. (Apart from the time involved, it would be like eating gourmet food all the time, which can get a little wearying.) Depending on your circumstances,  Spicy Sex could be an annual weekend away,  or it could be a monthly ‘challenge’ where you take it in turns to create a “Spicy Saturday In”.

However, if you think Spicy Sex is the great aim, you’ll have trouble getting there without the Sensual Sex. Because as I’ve so often written about before, I believe that for a couple to be open enough with each other that they can be real about their desires, they have to be truly open to each other, and you need sensual connection for that. I encourage couples at least once a week, to have a sexual encounter that focuses on the sensual. Start with a bath, light candles, play music that moves your soul, spend time touching each other, hold each others’ gaze as you move slowly together in intercourse. Experience the ecstatic sensations of the valleys of sex, rather than the intense peaks. Feel the yumminess of it all. Experiment with blindfolds or restraint to heighten the sensory arousal, add sensory elements of taste, sound, touch and smell. Really lose yourselves in the experience.

So, maybe you could aim for Spicy Sex once a month, Sensual Sex once a week and Cup of Tea Sex once or twice a week. I can’t be prescriptive though. So let’s say plenty of nice Cup of Tea Sex, regular Sensual Sex, all interspersed with some Spicy Sex.

Having said that, the three categories don’t have to be mutually exclusive. A late night quickie under the covers is Cup of Tea Sex, but it can also feel very sensual if for example you light a candle by the bed and look into your partners eyes as you make love.  Or a quickie in the bathroom while your kids are having their porridge can certainly have elements of  Spice (a la naughty teenagers trying not be caught). Ideally a Sensual Sex session will be highly erotic and you can swing between the intensities of the peaks of sex and the exquisiteness of the valleys.

It’s all good! So allow for all types of sex in your life, from the simple to the spicy (whatever that is for you) and you’ll keep your sexual connection strong and your life so much more satisfying.
