An Evening With Mr Angel – ‘Oh What A Night’

Wednesday, November 19th, 2014

Buck Angel is more than just a transman, or a film maker, or author, or motivational speaker. Mr Angel, as the MB team likes to say with no small degree of respect, is quite simply, an inspiration. His appearance here on Monday last has to be one of our favourite in-store appearances yet and he gave over 50 locals a compelling evening of film, talk, understanding and community.

The new documentary, Mr Angel, a recent winner at the Seatle Film Festival, gave us all a much deeper understanding of Buck’s life experience, particularly from the view of his family. It is rare to hear the voices of family and friends in such open and honest ways – especially when connected with such a public personality.

We highly recommend viewing of the documentary (it’s available on Netflix amongst other sources) for anyone who is transitioning and it is a virtual must-see for their closest friends and family. There are so many questions answered in unexpected and heartfelt ways.

One of the great joys of having Buck in-store is his willingness not only to share, but to talk on-on-one with our communities about his experience, and to hear the stories of others’. There were more than a few folks in the audience that have told us how important and special it was for them to connect to Buck in person. For the first time we found our audience was not just adults, but families – those who want to love and support the trans men and women in their lives. Buck managed to highlight the challenges faced by families in beautifully honest ways and it left an impression on us all.

We’d like to thank Buck, Bruce and the MB team (who worked SO hard on the day), our standing-room-only crowd and Collide Magazine for covering the event. We’ll have news soon on their Buck Angel competition.

My Mistress – the Aussie film changing minds and breaking hearts…

Wednesday, November 5th, 2014

It’s been a while since Max Black was excited by the premiere of a new Australian film. It seems like its been a while since we’ve seen the sort of challenging, exciting and ultimately entertaining productions that gave us the boom of pictures we rushed to local screens to see in the 90’s. Well that seems to be changing and we couldn’t be more excited about the launch of My Mistress from Transmission Films, in cinemas this week on November 6th.

AFI Award-winning actore Harrison Gilberston (The Turning) stars alongside acclaimed French actress Emmanuelle Beart (Mission Impossible, 8 Women) in the his unconventional and provocative love story in which an infatuation between the vulnerable teenage romantic Charlie and S&M Mistress Maggie soon becomes something more dangerous.

Director Stephen Lance’s first feature is an unexpected tale of misplaced love. Working with writer Gerard Lee (TVs Top of the Lake), cinematographer Geoffrey Simpson (Shine), Oscar nominated editor Jill Bilcock (Red Dog) and Oscar winning costume designer Angus Strathie (Moulin Rouge), Lance has crafted an impressively bold, sensual and visually captivating debut.

We love the heart in this film, and whilst the emotional strings are regularly plucked it is the sensitive and sometimes genuinely fun treatment of eroticism that contrasts against the angst that Aussie films so often have when dealing with sex. This is a refreshing film by Australian standards and whether or not the idea of mistresses, bdsm or power relationships interests you is well worth the ticket price.

See you at the cinema!

My Mistress is out nationally on November 6th. MY MISTRESS Poster
